		<description>Mapping Memory: Preserving &#38;amp; Restoring the Landscape of Sicily’s Tuna Fisheries

M.Arch Thesis Project
Tulane University
Advisors: Prof. Carol Reese, Dean Inaki Alday
2023

A minimal approach to adaptive reuse that emphasizes history and landscape regeneration.
[To read the full thesis, click here] While many scholars have established the architectural value of Sicily’s
tuna fisheries, few have studied the adaptive reuse of these buildings. In this thesis project, I examine
the reuse of tuna fisheries in Sicily and offer a proposal for their
reactivation. Many of these seventeenth-to-nineteenth century stone structures,
called tonnare, have been converted from abandoned factories into
cultural, commercial, and hospitality centers—such as museums, retail
districts, and resorts. My study considers the tonnare as
actively evolving monuments, emphasizing the durability of cultural memory. Though
the fisheries have been substantially altered from their original uses, the
traditions they represent still resonate within their surrounding communities. Nevertheless,
I find that many of the fisheries’ conversion into luxury properties inadequately
conveys the history and material culture of the tuna fishing industry. How,
then, might the tonnare be reinserted back into everyday life in ways
that support public use and honor their complex past?
Focusing on one case
study in southeastern Sicily, I present a minimal approach to adaptive reuse with an emphasis on history, terrain,
and landscape regeneration. Understanding these buildings as
embedded within a larger geography, rather than as autonomous structures, has
been essential to my investigation. Examining the fisheries’ relationships to their
surrounding landscape expands the historical site, allowing for a deeper
appreciation of the monuments themselves and creating new possibilities for further
uses. To this end, I propose preserving and reactivating the tonnara&#38;nbsp;through non-invasive programming, including exhibitions, performance spaces, and
an artisan market. The landscape becomes one of not only education
and history, but also public recreation and ecological restoration: new paths
better connect beachgoers to the water and a small “village” of humble vacation
apartments allows visitors to linger. A phased planting strategy will over time repopulate the site with
native vegetation, controlling erosion and providing shade.&#38;nbsp;
As the recipient of the 2022 Robert A. M. Stern Travel Fellowship, I presented on this research at the RAMSA offices in March of 2022.&#38;nbsp;

A housing proposal for Greenwood, MS that focuses on single mothers and their families.
43% of Greenwood’s families are single mothers—many of whom also work. This project aims to support some of these working mothers through providing community-oriented housing that’s bolstered by socialized amenities, including a daycare, outdoor recreational space, and communal dining areas.

Located in a former manufacturing district, the development embraces an existing warehouse, whose ground floor has been converted into communal and retail spaces. Each housing unit looks out onto a central courtyard, which features areas for play as well as contemplation. The development is “punctured” by multiple alleyways that, while mirroring vacant lots and alleys downtown, are reclaimed as access points to the vibrant social interior of the housing block.

A mass timber office building that makes use of local materials and prioritizes ground-floor public uses.
This comprehensive proposal for an office building on Poydras Street in downtown New Orleans is framed around three notions of linkage: 1) urban linkages, 2) visual linkages, and 3) environmental linkages. This four-story mass-timber building acts as a node that draws in the public realm, linking a busy plaza in front of the building with the quieter, more contemplative urban space in the rear. Through employing locally-produced and sustainable materials - from Southern Longleaf Pine in its structural system to Mississippi River clay in its ceramic facade - the building is deeply rooted in its particular landscape.

2021This design-build studio partnered with a local farm to construct an outdoor teaching kitchen.Sugar Roots Farm is a teaching farm in New Orleans that educates K-12 students on ecological stewardship and food production. This design-build studio partnered with Sugar Roots Farm, in collaboration with the Albert and Tina Small Center for Collaborative Design at Tulane University, to construct an outdoor educational kitchen.

I and my 23 classmates worked with the farm to realize a multipurpose space for educational programming and food processing. The structure features secure storage, ample counter space, and a washing station. An entrance ramp leads to a boardwalk that looks out over a flood-mitigating bioswale. Along the kitchen’s eastern edge, a series of screen-walls with signage identify Sugar Roots as a fun, educational, and change-oriented organization. The structure serves as a welcoming entrance to the farm that signals their mission.

Reimagining the museum as a “living archive” that engages with coastal ecosystems and communities.Museums are often understood as static spaces, but what if a museum created a visitor experience that is neither fixed nor climate controlled? With a rich array of wildlife, Living Museum is a catalogue of and monument to the diversity of New York’s coastal ecosystem. It demonstrates how museums can proactively respond to our changing climate.

An open-air tower of scaffolding and metal mesh, its materials are repurposed from nearby construction sites and serve as a habitat for native species. Its foundation is amphibious, with a hollow concrete slab attached to telescoping pylons that rise and fall with sea levels. With the exception of the occasional researcher, the museum is free from human interference: visitors engage with it from a traveling educational center that also serves as a gallery and research facility. Living Museum questions the notion of our traditionally static institutions, reimagining them as active participants in preserving our environment.

This competition entry was shortlisted and exhibited in the Glasgow Science Centre in 2020.

For a century, Kansas City served as Gateway to the West, a hub connecting the coasts of America.The East Village, a neighborhood in downtown Kansas City (KCMO), remains a fissure between the city’s renewing downtown to the west and divested communities to the east. My project team proposed transforming this expanse of parking lots into a vital gateway to downtown—a vibrant, linear park and dense urban node that stitches the neighborhoods around downtown together after generations of estrangement. Our strategy pivots around three “pillars”—opportunity, community, and sustainability—leveraging innovative technology and highlighting community resources to create a sustainable and equitable gateway to KCMO.

Examining the intermingling of past and present, celebrating a historic structure while also testing its boundaries.
This rehabilitation project reimagines a community/athletic center as a site of exploration and perambulation. Located in Midtown Manhattan, W.O.R.M. (Winding Outpost for Revelatory Meandering) integrates four prewar historic buildings into a whole that interrogates the relationship between near and far, past and present.

Much as Gordon Matta-Clark’s Conical Intersect encourages a reinterpretation of buildings as an interplay of voids, W.O.R.M. features a series of cuts and tunnelings that disrupt as much as they open up to a new expression of communal space. A winding stair spirals up through holes bored into the floor plates, linking activities found on different floors to each other and back to the street, allowing for a meandering experience of the center.

2019
How can we learn from medieval monastic architecture when designing for collective living?
Nestled into a hill in Chatham, NY, Cellular Collisions explores whether the perceived disadvantages of cohabitation might be transformed into assets that spur housemates to reconsider their relationships with each other. The project considers the following questions:

(1) What if the boundaries among private, collective, and public spaces become more porous?

(2) How are we to conceive of the personal in a space that prioritizes the communal?

(3) How might small, monastic bedrooms allow for individual contemplation while encouraging housemates to spend time in one another’s company?

Exhibition at Robert A. M. Stern

2022 RAMSA Travel FellowNew York, NY

As the 2022 RAMSA Travel Fellow, I traveled to Sicily to document the reuse of tuna fishery buildings.My fellowship proposal, titled “Mapping Memory: Linking the Landscape of Sicily’s Tuna Fisheries,” was linked to my graduate architecture thesis research. During the summer of 2022, I traveled to Sicily to document nine tuna fisheries and understand the ways they have been adapted for contemporary uses.&#38;nbsp;
In March 2023, I presented on my research at the Robert A. M. Stern architecture office in New York. (To see the video of my presentation, click here.) I also organized an exhibition in the office to display my drawings and photographs, shown below.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>Material Explorations

Personal Work
2022 - Present

Working with clay has informed my material-oriented approach to design.
I have long been inspired by the idea of using clay as a building material. Recently, I’ve been getting to know it at a smaller scale: within a ceramics studio. In this practice, material properties inform the design rather than vice versa.
Working with clay has been deeply grounding and also challenging. I often have specific ideas for what I want to make, only to find that the clay is not responding as I would like, or that the glaze finish looks funny. Yet, this is a practice in patience and open-mindedness, a long process of becoming familiar with clay’s quirks and qualities.
