Material Explorations

Personal Work
2022 - Present

Working with clay has informed my material-oriented approach to design.

I have long been inspired by the idea of using clay as a building material. Recently, I’ve been getting to know it at a smaller scale: within a ceramics studio. In this practice, material properties inform the design rather than vice versa.

Working with clay has been deeply grounding and also challenging. I often have specific ideas for what I want to make, only to find that the clay is not responding as I would like, or that the glaze finish looks funny. Yet, this is a practice in patience and open-mindedness, a long process of becoming familiar with clay’s quirks and qualities.
